“Children of the Diaspora” is based on my identity as Filipino-American… ethnically Filipino but born and raised in the states. A lot of my life, I felt like I was trapped in between: neither feeling entirely Filipino nor entirely American, and that’s where my collection started.
My collection celebrates the juxtaposition of two different worlds: the Philippines and the States. In all stages of production, I’ve grown to love the experiences I’ve had in the states and cherished every moment I have back home. Both places are my identity and both I consider to be my home, so I wanted to bring that into my collection by focusing on traditional Filipino garments like the “terno sleeve”, “barong”, traditional lace— as well as Western tailoring through the use of wool and bespoke detailing.
